CJ Maraga Appoints New Judges

Chief Justice David Maraga on Friday announced changes to the judiciary by gazetting 38 new magistrates.

According to Gazette notice 10809, the persons will be resident magistrates and deputy registrars and will be posted across the country starting November 13.

Maraga has been the center of attention ever since he nullified the August 8 Presidential election and has been praised and criticised in equal measure by leaders from both sides of the political divide.

Earlier this week, Maraga refuted a report claiming that the government had refused to offer Supreme Court judges extra security.

Reuters news agency on Tuesday published a report titled Kenyan Supreme Court Judges Denied Extra Security After Shooting, a report that suggested how the Kenyan government is sabotaging the seven judges of the country’s highest court.

The CJ rubbished the report stating the government had, on the contrary, beefed up his security.

“Our attention has been drawn to a report by Reuters news agency claiming that the government has turned down a request for extra security for judges.

"The office of the Chief Justice wishes to state that this report is untrue,” read the statement from the office of the CJ to newsrooms.

The CJ revealed that the government through Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett had enhanced their security details ever since the shooting of a bodyguard attached to Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu on Tuesday, last week.

Mwilu’s bodyguard shooting on the eve of the apex’s court issuing a directive on the repeat presidential election was the reason she gave for not showing up in court the following day.
