Jubilee Senator Asks Government to Create Prime Minister's Position

Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki has supported the call for the amendment of the constitution to create a Prime Minister's position.

Speaking in Maara Subcounty in Tharaka Nithi, the Senator stated that the creation of the position would ensure an all-inclusive government.

Kithure made the statement after National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) asked the government to consider the Premier's post.

NCCK Secretary General Peter Karanja stated that the country was divided after the fresh polls and suggested that the most effective way forward would be having a Prime Minister.

The clergy also proposed the creation of two Deputy Prime Minister slots stating that it would help to make the government more accountable.

Karanja, however, clarified that he was not advocating for a nusu-mkate (coalition) government as the appointment of the Prime Minister would be made by the President.

NCCK's proposal was, however, rejected by the Assemblies of Pentecostal Churches and Ministries in Embu.

The clerics argued that creating the position and two deputies would be a big burden on taxpayers.

The Prime Minister's position was last created in 2008 as part of the Grand Coalition Government.

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga took over the position after brokering a power-sharing deal with then President Mwai Kibaki.
