Police Boss Warns Kenyans Against Attending NASA Rally

Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome on Sunday warned those planning to attend a National Super Alliance (NASA) planned for Sunday afternoon to stay away.

Mr Koome labelled NASA's mega rally that was held at the Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi's Donholm Estate as one that had been convened against the law.

The police boss argued that the NASA leaders had not given notice of their intent to hold a public meeting as is required by law.

"It is very unfortunate that I've found out through the media that there are some people who are having a meeting in Jacaranda this afternoon.

"Chapter 56 of the laws of Kenya states clearly that anyone who intends to have a meeting or procession of any sort must notify the local OCS.  You must tell that local OCS so that the police assure of security," the officer pointed out.

He went on to question NASA's motive in failing to communicate their plan to the police hypothesising that the meetings often turn chaotic.

"Why do you want to break the law? When you do that, in the process we have people injured, we have rivalry among those attending, people are injured.

"When we sense the threat to life and property and move in to disperse such a crowd, we hear of police brutality," Koome posed.

He went on to assert that the police will treat the meeting as illegal and NASA leaders will be held accountable for any eventualities that may occur during their public rally.

"I want to say this clearly, I'm going to perform the job given by Kenyans without fear of favour.  anybody who thinks is going to keep residents of the city to live in fear, i will not allow that. And please assist me my colleagues in the media to get this out there.

"Why do you want to take advantage of the weak people, demonstrating along the road and some are hit by vehicles, you have not notified police to divert traffic? This time everybody will carry his own cross but the job will be done," Commander Koome declared.
