Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu to Attend President Uhuru Kenyatta's Inauguration

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to attend President Uhuru Kenyatta's inauguration on November 28.

Media reports in Israel seen by Kenyans.co.ke indicated that the PM will fly into the country next week and will be among 20 world leaders who are set to grace the event.

On Tuesday, President Kenyatta's communication unit was on the spot over a letter that was shared on its Twitter page.

Kenyans raised issue with the statement which was dated November 2 and there were reports that the congratulatory letter from Israel had been forged.

Social media was abuzz as eyebrows were raised over Netanyahu's signature but Dennis Itumbi - Director of Digital Communications in the Office of the President - rubbished those claims stating that the government would not make such a glaring error.

He clarified that the congratulatory message was legitimate but had been sent immediately after President Kenyatta was declared winner of the fresh election held on October 26.

Netanyahu was the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister to visit Kenya when he came in 2016 and almost every activity along Nairobi streets came to a standstill.

There was traffic all the way from the airport and several city roads were shut down.

Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe on Thursday laughed off claims that the government was soliciting congratulatory messages from foreign countries stating that President Kenyatta was duly elected and is not “suffering from an inferiority complex” to warrant solicitation of messages.

“There is no reason whatsoever for the government to solicit congratulatory messages. Even if nobody congratulates us it is immaterial,” stated Kiraithe.
