Drama as Flying Squad and Police Officers Point Guns at Each Other

Flying Squad detectives and Administration Police officers (APs) on Thursday clashed in Kisumu following a crackdown on a Probox ferrying illegal alcohol.

The two police units drew guns against each other as APs moved to impound the vehicle, a process the detectives blocked.

"APs tried to secure the vehicle but the Flying Squad guys that were in another car, refused and guns were cocked as both sides held their ground.

"It was then that the AP called for reinforcement that the situation eased," a witness told reporters.

Citizen reports that the Kisumu County Police Commander John Kamau and the AP Regional Commander Joseph Keitany were locked up in an hour-long meeting with Flying Squad bosses to resolve the matter.

The said Probox was loaded with 100 cartons of Coffee spirit, Simba Waragi and Kitoko illicit brews obtained from across the Kenya-Uganda border.

According to the Police Commander, the 1200 litres of alcohol were equal to a street value of Sh360,000.

The police had earlier tried to flag down the vehicle but the driver sped off leading both police units to pursue.

The driver lost control of the Probox and rammed into the guardrail where the suspects were nabbed and the standoff between the law enforcers ensued.

Flying Squad is a department under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) which is led by Director Ndegwa Muhoro.
