Moses Kuria Questions Former Minister on Salgaa Accident

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria on Sunday questioned former Roads Minister Franklin Bett on what was done on the Salgaa section of the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway during his stint after yet another accident claimed 36 lives.

This came after Bett criticised the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for banning long distance night travel for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) following the accident, noting that the body was ignoring 'the core of the problem'.

Bett stated that the accidents were down to 85% human error and 7% human negligence.

It was then that, in an online exchange, Kuria asked him whether there had been plans to make the stretch of road a dual carriageway when he was in charge of roads in the country during the era of the Grand Coalition Government.

Bett stated that such plans had been discussed but were not a priority.

He further affirmed that he believed that the dual carriage road would not solve the road carnage problem, and instead called for a shift in motorists' attitudes.

The idea of turning the Salgaa-Sachang'wan stretch of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway a dual carriage road has been mentioned by many as a potential solution to the constant accidents.

The Sunday morning accident involving a bus and a trailer sparked serious public outrage with some calling for the disbandment of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Former Bureti MP Bett further noted that disbanding the NTSA would not solve anything.

A serious spike in road accidents has been witnessed in the country over the festive season.
