Former Nairobi Deputy Governor Hints at Going Back to Office

Former Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke on Sunday disclosed that he was willing to go back to serve Nairobians as second in command in the County structure.

Speaking during a panel discussion with Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Citizen TV, the former Wiper DG stated that if offered the position, he would not hesitate to serve Kenyans.

"I got into public service to serve the public. I'd be available and I'd be willing to serve the people of Nairobi and the people of Kenya in any capacity because that's where my passion lies," he conveyed.

The statement came after Polycarp Igathe resigned from his post as Deputy Governor on Friday.

Mr Mueke opined that the reason why Igathe quit his position is that he had not developed a system to handle disagreements with Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

"A Deputy Governor should support his Governor. This way, there’s trust between the two parties. There must have been a conflict of interest between Governor Sonko and Polycarp Igathe.

"A Deputy Governor must know that his duties are delegated to him by the Governor. A Deputy Governor cannot do their own things. I think this was Igathe’s challenge," he stated.

Mueke added that he survived his full term under then county boss Evans Kidero because he humbled himself and respected the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader.

"For me, we agreed with the Governor then, Dr. Kidero, on what we needed to do for the people so as to avoid conflict," he explained.

In his resignation statement, Igathe stated that he had failed to earn the trust of Governor Sonko in running the county.

"Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive admin and management of the county.

"Without fear, favor or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far," he stated.

Meanwhile, a leaked audio has revealed Governor Sonko's last orders to Mr Igathe before he resigned on Friday evening.

In the audio, the Governor is heard briefing his deputy on road projects in the city and how he busted employees who tried to inflate vouchers at City Hall.

"Your road projects are doing well although there are some employees from finance who have tried inflating figures please talk to the controller of the budget," he stated.
