Nation Media To Fire Employees in Latest Restructuring

The Nation Media Group (NMG) on Wednesday morning announced that a section of its staff will be sent home in the latest restructuring.

In a statement, the company noted that it was working on being a digital media house and as such, some of the workforce will be reduced.

"Over the recent past, we embarked on a strategic journey of transforming the group into a modern Twenty-First Century digital content company. We have made critical strides such as converging our newsroom, launching innovative products, developed new revenue streams while we ensure our current print and broadcast business.

"In this regard, the implementation of the strategy will continue to involve the reorganisation of our operations across the group. Regrettably, this will result in the reduction of our workforce. The exercise will be carried out with due respect to our employers and within the Kenyan laws.

"We will strive to provide all the necessary support to help manage through this transition. We wish to reassure our stakeholders that we continue to be committed to delivering value in line with their expectations," the group announced in a statement.

Nation Media did not, however, specify the employees who will be affected in the reorganisation.

The media industry in Kenya has for the last few years been undergoing changes with different companies working to upgrade from manual to digital.

Last year, NMG conducted a similar exercise where a position of Executive Editor was created and allocated to veteran journalist Mutuma Mathiu.

In 2015, Standard Media Group released a number of its staff under a voluntary retirement offer as it sought to trim the newsroom to save on cost and realign its business model.

Similarly, Royal Media Services Ltd also sent home several employees in the competitive business environment that has seen growing pressure on revenues.
