Ahmednasir Abdullahi Explains Why Kenya Could be a Rogue State

Renowned lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has expressed concerns about actions by the Kenyan government that may turn the country into a rogue state.

Mr Ahmednasir was referring to the government's defiance of a court order to restore the signals of NTV, Citizen TV and KTN News, a move that the Interior Ministry has contravened.

The government suspended the TV signals following the media stations' disregard on orders that prohibited live coverage and airing of the NASA oathing ceremony at Uhuru Park.

In a report by The New York Times, the lawyer stated: “When there is a court order you don’t obey, you look like a rogue state,” Ahmednasir asserted.

The lawyer, who has previously represented President Uhuru Kenyatta in the Supreme Court appeared to disagree with the continued clampdown on the media.

Through his Twitter handle, Mr Ahmednasir urged the government to obey court orders no matter how aggrieved and unhappy it is.

He further added that court orders represent "a constitutional democracy that is simply not negotiable."

There have been different voices of concern following the continued shutdown of the three TV stations by the government and the alleged plans to arrest some journalists.

On his part, former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga termed the situation as “a new crisis for democracy,”

“Defying a court order is subverting the rule of law.” Mutunga is quoted by The New York Times expressing his fears regarding the government's failure to comply with the court orders.

CS Fred Matiang'i had earlier on indicated that the government would continue with the TV shutdown until investigations are over.
