Larry Madowo's Photo From South Africa Sparks Online Debate

Former NTV anchor Larry Madowo on Monday sent a photo from South Africa that sparked an online debate.

The photo, that was seemingly sent from a hotel's bathroom, shows an inscription on the wall that requires the facility users to limit their shower time to three minutes.

Madowo posed to the users on the possibility of taking shower within the hotel's recommended time in a bid to save water.

This saw netizens kick off a debate on Madowo's Facebook page that attracted a variety of comments ranging from sarcasm to astonishment to appreciation of the situation in Kenya.

Reports indicate that showers are the third largest water use for many urban households after flushing toilets and washing laundry.

On average, a shower uses 65.1 litres and lasts for 8.2 minutes at average flow rate of 7.9 litres per minute.

Such high rates of water consumption not only lead to water crisis due to shortage in supply but also raises the household bills and expenditure.

However, others were keen to address the looming issue of water shortage that saw former President Mwai Kibaki issue a warning on a possible crisis in future.

South Africa is undergoing a water crisis with earlier reports indicating that Cape Town is running out of water.

The drought-stricken urban had issued a warning estimating for mid-April "Day Zero" - when the city's reservoirs were expected to be depleted of water and taps in the city run dry.

However, April rainfall was key in staving off Cape Town's Day Zero which saw "Day Zero" pushed back to an estimated 2019.
