Patients Sent Home in Kisii Hospitals Over Utensils Shortage

Hospitals in Kisii County are on the spot after it emerged that patients are being denied meals for lack of utensils.

Members of  County Assembly are up in arms after the largest hospital in the region asked patients to buy their own plates so as to be served with meals.

Caregivers tasked with serving food to the critically ill, according to local dailies, have been skipping patients who they find without plates during meal hours.

Utensil sellers have since flocked the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital entrance to sell plates to patients and their relatives to help them get food.

Angered by the matter, Nyakoe ward representative John Amisi informed the county assembly speaker that the County Executive Member for Health should explain why the patients were being subjected to the demands.

Amisi told the house that it was embarrassing for patients to be denied food because of a utensils shortage yet money had been allocated for the same.

“This is a matter of grave concern that should be addressed with the urgency it deserves, as the assembly we are alive to the fact that enough money is provided to our health facilities. How it ends that they don’t have plates to serve patients with food is distressing,” Amisi informed the house.

Both the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital boss, Dr Enock Ondari and the County Health CEC Sarah Omache could not comment on the matter.

Dr Ondari referred media inquests to Ms Omache, who stated that she could not comment on the matter since she was away on leave.

Nation Newspaper established that two sub-county hospitals at Ogembo and Nyamache were also asking patients to buy their own plates, cups and spoons.
