WARNING: How Criminals Are Tricking and Robbing Motorists - Police

The National Police Service (NPS) on Friday issued a warning over a new strategy where criminals are smashing windscreens and car windows to trick and rob commuters along Thika Super Highway.

The warning came after a victim who escaped the attackers complained that his windshield was smashed at Exit 13 (Gwa-Kairu) in Ruiru.

"If you live around Ruiru/Juja area take care. Thugs are stoning cars hoping that you will stop and they rob you as early as 8 pm. Am lucky I didn't stop till I got to Kimbo," one citizen had raised alarm.

The police have confirmed that several cases on similar attacks have been reported so far and revealed that action by the law enforcement agencies is underway.

"We have received this information and our officers on the ground are taking relevant action not only in this area but other surrounding areas where insecurity alerts have been forwarded to us," the statement by the NPS reads.

A narration from another victim reads: "Thika Super Highway users please avoid the outer lane when approaching Exit 13. Yesterday at 9 pm in a span of 5 minutes 3 vehicles including mine were smashed.

Accounts of the victims indicate that the thugs are pelting the vehicles with stones with the intention to cause accidents or make the drivers stop and check what is happening.

In the process, the thugs get to waylay the victims and rob them in what appears to be a new strategy targetting unsuspecting victims.

Earlier in the week, a matatu driver deliberately caused an accident which helped save passengers from a possible carjacking along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Witnesses narrated how a group of four armed thugs in a Nissan matatu had tried to take over the vehicle near Raini in Naivasha when the driver swerved off the road and landed into a ditch.

In the process, the thugs managed to escape without robbing anyone though some of the passengers were injured and rushed to the hospital.
