Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has declared Tuesday 21 August 2018 a Public Holiday.
In Gazette Notice dated August 17, 2018, the CS stated that the holiday is meant to allow Idd-Ul-Azha celebrations across the country.
"It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares that Tuesday, the 21st August 2018 be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Azha, 2018," reads the notice sent out on Friday evening.
Last year, Idd-Ul-Azha was not declared a public holiday, despite having been celebrated as one in 2016.
CS Matiang'i had argued that the day had been listed as a Muslim holiday and not a public holiday.
He pledged that there were plans underway for the government to present a Bill in Parliament to make it a national public holiday.
