Bonny Khalwale Blames President Uhuru for 16% Tax on Fuel

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale called for the impeachment of President Uhuru Kenyatta blaming him for the current economic crisis facing the country.

During an interview on NTV’s Breakfast show AM LIVE, Khalwale stated that the blame should not be directed to the Treasury CS Henry Rotich but to President Kenyatta.

The former Senator pointed out that the chief executive of the government is the president who is responsible for the "reckless borrowing".

He further explained that the current implementation of the 16 percent VAT on fuel products is due to the borrowing that left the current with a massive debt.

“The person to impeach is the President. Remember that the Senate plays a key role in the president’s impeachment,” remarked Khalwale.

The once Member of Parliament for Ikolomani constituency added that pressure should be applied to have Uhuru assent the bill passed in parliament last week to suspend implementation of the new tax.

Khalwale pointed out that the borrowed money would have financed the loans if the government had utilised it in facilitating revenue generating projects.

The politician remarks comes three days after the implementation of the new tax on fuel products.

The directive by the Treasury CS Henry Rotich caused an increase in fuel prices and fare charges.

Implementation of the new tax caused a countrywide uproar with President Kenyatta being asked to reverse the directive once he returns from China.

ODM party leader Raila Odinga assured Kenyans that the Head of State will reverse the new tax in order to ease the high cost of living experienced by the citizens.

Minority Leader John Mbadi echoed his party leaders remarks calling the move unfair after parliament passed a motion to move it to 2020.
