Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi Faces MCAs Impeachment Motion

Nairobi County legislators are are yet again set to take a swipe at speaker Beatrice Elachi in a move that could see her dethroned.

The members of the County Assembly called for a special meeting whose discussion is expected to surround Speaker Elachi's conduct at the county assembly and a possible impeachment.

This will be the second time Elachi will be faced with a removal debate after surviving the June ouster that had been initiated by Waithaka Ward MCA Mr Antony Karanja.

The recent arrest of the Assembly Clerk Jacob Ngwele and other senior officials reportedly prompted the special session to be held on Thursday.

"Yes we will have a special sitting of MCAs on Thursday. The far I know is that they are saying that the Speaker has been bad, but I do not know the whole story, that is what I have been seeing them writing," Elachi confirmed to Daily Nation.

Speaker Elachi and the Clerk have reportedly had disagreements over financial malpractices at the Assembly and award of tenders that have cast a cloud of corruption on the House.

The clerk was arrested in connection with suspicious procurement of books worth Kshs1 Million.

The speaker had written to the Auditor General and the Public Procurement Oversight Authority seeking to have loopholes in the county assembly procurement systems sealed.
