John Onkendi Lands Deal at Standard Group After Viral Video

  • A short video clip is rewriting the story of a ten-year-old boy from Suneka, Kisii County.

    John Onkendi, a class two pupil at Suneka Primary was filmed by football fans and later uploaded on social media to showcase his talent and knowledge of the English Premier League teams.

    His video became an internet sensation early this week and it has emerged Onkendi had been rejected by the school after his teachers recommended that he should be taken to a special learning institution.

    "My teacher has always troubled me. I would have loved to move to a different school because my teachers say I am mentally challenged. They want me taken to a special school but I can not allow that because I am not mad," narrates Onkendi.

    He was hosted by Radio Maisha on Friday morning after the Standard Media Group embarked on ensuring he gets support to grow his talent and a chance to join a good school.

    Okendi who is lastborn in a family of three lives with his grandmother Mary Bonareri, who has been raising him since his mother died when he was just two years.

    "I delayed joining school because of my father. He could not manage to support us after the death of my mother. We do not even have a house given all our property was sold to help treat my mother but she did not survive," narrates Okendi.

    He aspires to be a sports journalist who would work as a radio presenter.

    Onkendi's elder brother Shadrack Onkendi is a candidate at Itibo Primary School.

    The two live in their grandmother's house and have an endless struggle meeting their basic needs.

    Onkendi's father allegedly sold their only house for Kshs5,000 and leased out their remaining piece of land for Kshs2,000.

    "We had some piece of land in Nyamira and it had a house there but my father sold it. He also leased out the land. My grandmother was unhappy about these decisions and she took us to live in her kitchen. She is the one who does everything for us," says Onkendi. 

    After the interview, Onkendi had a chance to interact with sports presenter Stephen Mukangai and prominent media personalities at KTN.

    Kenyans through a concerted effort offered to raise funds that would support Onkendi achieve his dream.
