Former Presidential Candidate Peter Solomon Gichira Sues IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati

Former presidential candidate Peter Solomon Gichira on Tuesday moved to court seeking to have IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati removed from his position at the electoral body.

In the suit filed at the High Court, Gichira is seeking to have Chebukati declared unfit to hold public office.

He insists that the IEBC Chair demonstrated his incompetency for allegedly lying under oath when the presidential candidate challenged Chebukati's decision to lock him out of the 2017 presidential race.

"A state officer, for instance, is required to accurately and honestly represent information to the public and demonstrate honesty in the conduct of public affairs.

"Chebukati has neither those two requirements," the court papers read in part.

The disgruntled politician further told the court that the chairman had demonstrated bias in handling his application to vie for the presidency.

He argued that Chebukati had, therefore, violated the Leadership and Integrity Act 2012.

The aspirant further argued that he attempted to petition the National Assembly on the matter but his petition was thrown out for not meeting the requirements of a parliamentary petition.

Gichira's woes began in May 2017 after he was denied the chance to vie for the presidency.

He was arrested shortly after and detained when it emerged that he had allegedly attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of Anniversary Towers after he broke one of the windows.
