Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo on Wednesday declared his stand on the looming showdown in parliament as lawmakers prepare to heed or oppose President Uhuru Kenyatta's memoranda on fuel tax.
While the number of opposition-minded lawmakers has arguably dwindled since the March handshake between President Kenyatta and the ODM party leader Raila Odinga, Otiende has remained untamed.
The legislator has vowed to oppose the position of the party maintaining that he will vote against the imposition of 8% VAT on petroleum products.
Through his Twitter handle, the ombudsman emeritus stated that his position had not changed even after the Orange House parliamentary group meeting chaired by the former Prime Minister on Tuesday.
Raila is reported to have muscled the opposition allied MPs to approve President Kenyatta's memoranda, a position Otiende pledges to overlook.
"Good people, many have asked if my stand on VAT has changed, NO it hasn’t. I will vote against the imposition of 8% VAT on Petroleum Products," declared the MP in a post on his Twitter handle.
He went on to state that he believes "to be right, then we engage on what else needs to go, including CDF, Cabinet Administrative Secretaries, the National Youth Service, the Big 4, and others."
A number of Kenyans on Twitter, appearing helpless after the corrosion of the country's once most aggressive and determined opposition, backed his stand urging him to convince more MPs to consider shooting down the new taxes.
One user, Eunice Gichane, told the MP: "It will be a big thanks if you mobilise and get the required numbers, on Thursday we are waiting to know the MPs verdict."
