Okiya Omtata to Lock Ksh 370000 Public Donation on Mshwari

Human Rights activist Okiya Omtata has revealed that he has received Ksh 370, 000 donations spurned online by Kenyans.

Speaking on Tuesday, Omtata explained that he cannot use the money because he was not part of the group of people who appealed online for the donation.

Instead, he intimated that he will lock the money on M-Shwari and await consultations on how to spend it.

The activist began receiving these donations last week Friday as a thank you for his numerous lawsuits challenging the government.

He has already filed a petition challenging the new controversial Finance Bill with a new tax levy on Petroleum products.

In the lawsuit, Omtata claims that the lawsuit’s implementation, which took effect on September 1, is unlawful and irregular.

He further adds that the implementation has affected the price of essential goods and that it is at odds with Article 47 of the Constitution.

In the petition, the Executive Director of Kenyans for Justice and Development Trust seeks to understand the fate of the bill that the president returned to Parliament with reservations in which MPs approved.

The petition also looks for the court to declare the Finance Act 2018 unconstitutional as it was passed by acclamation and not division of the vote as well as declare the president’s vote powers limited to expressing reservations and not proposing amendments to bills.

The campaign was started on Facebook when a user by the name Kaka Baba asked every working Kenyan to "M-Pesa Omtata Sh10 for photocopy bus fare na (and) lunch. It should total Sh240 million.”

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has previously complained that the publicly trusted activist is stealing jobs meant for lawyers.
