50 Kenyan Doctors in Cuba to Spend Ksh 215 Million for Specialised Training

The government recently sent 50 doctors to Cuba to undergo specialised training that will cost Ksh 215 million.

The physicians will be out of the country for a period of two and a half years, with the taxpayer expected to cater for their stay.

According to invitation letters seen by the Standard, they will undertake a 15-week language proficiency training at an expenditure of $3000 (Ksh300,000) per doctor totalling to about Ksh15 million.

The medical training at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana will cost Ksh1.05 million per doctor in fees for every academic year.

Accounting for the two and a half years that they will take, the sum will be approximately Ksh130 million.

Treasury will cater for their accommodation and meals at a cost of Ksh2,100 per day for every doctor. They will also be entitled to medical insurance during the entire stay.

The team was seen off by Health Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman and Kisii Governor James Ongwae.

This is in line with the MoU steered by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro in March.

At least 100 Cuban doctors arrived in Kenya in July to take up specialized roles in local hospitals across the nation.

The partnership is meant to boost universal healthcare that is one of the four pillars that President Uhuru Kenyatta has prioritized in his second term.
