NCCK Throws Weight Behind Referendum Push, Issues Proposal

The National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK) on Thursday supported growing calls for a referendum to amend the constitution promulgated in 2010.

Secretary-General Canon Peter Karanja stated that the debate was healthy, highlighting key issues NCCK wants to see addressed in the proposed poll.

NCCK's proposal for the referendum seeks expansion of the executive and reduction of elected and nominated representatives.

Karanja noted that NCCK wants the position of Prime Minister re-introduced with two deputies so as to foster inclusivity.

He further proposed that the number of Cabinet Secretaries be reduced.

In addition, he stated that the NCCK would like to see the number of representatives reduced so as to slash the national wage bill.

He spoke after a ceremony at the Bethany Hall Catholic Diocese of Lodwar during a one-day visit of Turkana.

The referendum debate has been gaining steam with leaders and various Kenyans chiming in on the topic.

Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot spoke to Kenyans.co.ke earlier this week on his push for a referendum seeking to reduce the number of representatives to 194 from 416.

He argues that this would bring down the cost of parliament to Sh5B from Sh36.8 Billion a year.

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga, on the other hand, declared that a referendum was unstoppable.

“Those who are opposed to this debate are like the cries of a frog that can never stop cattle from drinking water," he stated.
