Governor Okoth Obado Released From Prison

Migori Governor Okoth Obado on Wednesday morning appeared in court in the case of Sharon Otieno's murder where the judge granted him a Ksh5 million bail.

High Court judge Jessie Lesiit delivered the ruling on bail applications by Obado and his co-accused, Michael Oyamo and County Clerk Caspal Obiero at 9:50 am.

The Migori governor was directed to pay Ksh5 million bail with two sureties of the same amount after spending almost a month at Industrial Area Remand Prison.

During the ruling, the judge issued other conditions to be complied with by Obado failure to which the bail would be cancelled.

Among the terms set by Justice Lessit on Obado's bail were:

1. Obado would surrender his travel documents in court, that is his Kenyan, East Africa and diplomatic passports.

2. The Migori county boss was ordered to stay more than 20 kilometres from Homabay county where Sharon hails from.

3. Justice Lessit also ordered Obado not to intimidate parents or siblings of the deceased Sharon Otieno.

4. Governor Obado was restricted from contacting any of the witnesses in the case.

5. He was also directed to refrain from mentioning the case or Sharon in meetings and political rallies.

6. He shall not cause an adjournment during the period of the case.

7. He shall report to the Deputy Registrar of the Milimani High Court once a month.

His personal assistant, Oyamo, and Obiero were denied bail and directed to remain in custody.

The judge ruled that if released, the two would most likely abscond as well cause public disorder adding that there was sufficient ground not to free them.

The case will be coming for pre-trial on February 14 and hearing has been set for May 6-17, 2019.

Obado has been behind bars since his arrest on September 21 in connection with the murder of Ms Sharon, who was at the time seven months pregnant.
