Reason Bishop Wants Same-Sex Schools Banned

Nyahururu Catholic Bishop Joseph Mbatia has now called for the banning of same-sex schools linking them to increased cases of domestic violence.

The Bishop who is famed for his unique way of incorporating secular song in his sermons opined that domestic violence is fueled by lack of social skills in the society.

In his view, mixed schools are advantageous as they help in building social skills among learners.

Bishop Mbatia criticized the status of single sex schools saying they propagate gender stereotypes hence creating barrier to unique relationships.

Besides, he expressed concern that same-sex schools create confusion and limit many aspects in a child’s life.

"For example, girls will only know what they’re told about boys and the same will apply to boys only knowing what they are told about girls," the clergyman stated.

According to the Bishop, single-sex schools do not prepare people for marriage despite empowering them academically.

"They don’t prepare people for marriage hence it will be difficult for the children to cope with life after school," Bishop Mbatia added.

Kenya has in the recent years moved towards abolishing mixed-schools in favour of same-gender schools.

However, Maendeleo ya Wanaume (MAWA) through the chairman Nderitu Njoka has called for the establishment of universal mixed schools saying it will improve the deteriorating man-woman relations in the country.

The organisation also proposed that gender studies should be introduced as a mandatory subject in schools to improve gender relations.
