No More Cash transactions for NYS Tenders- CS Fred Matiang'i Announces

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i stated that the government will not allow cash transactions for tenders from the National Youth Service and prisons.

Speaking during the signing of a MoU with Public Service CS Margaret Kobia at Kaloleni Prison in Kilifi, Dr Matiang'i maintained that only electronic transactions and cheque payments will be accepted.

"We are going to use traceable receipt systems so that we can see where the money is going and by the end of this financial year, I am going to shock the country," Dr Matiang'i stated.

CS Matiang'i further explained that the move was arrived at since some individuals were playing around with government resources.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed President Uhuru Kenyatta's commitment to ensuring that there is accountability from the Youth Service going forward.

He also stated that ambitious programmes had been put in place between NYS and Kenya Prison Service to bring real change as required by law.

He added that there will be no change of the course on the reforms at the correctional services.

"Some people are saying that the reforms cannot work but I have met resistance in all the ministries that I have worked for but at the end, we saw changes and I want to assure you that we will deliver on this as well. These reforms are not easy, they are painful," the Interior CS stated.

Prof Kobia on her part assured that with the new dawn, there shall be accountability in the institutions.

"I promise you that no more money will be lost in NYS through procurement. We have seen that we have enough machinery to cater for some of our services within the different ministries," Prof Kobia remarked.

In July 2018 Prof Kobia cancelled all procurement contracts and asked suppliers to register afresh, in a move aimed at weeding out ghost companies.
