Governor Okoth Obado's security detail was disarmed during the weekend as the probe into the guns reportedly found in his homes takes a new turn.
During the weekend, the AP officers guarding Obado were directed to hand over their guns for ballistics examination at the DCI headquarters, Kiambu Road.
The governor had last week spent a night in police cells after his arrest on Wednesday in Nairobi.
He was held by the police after EACC investigators reported having recovered at least 8 firearms at his rural and Nairobi homes.
He was released on Friday on Kshs 500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount or Kshs 200,000 bail with the court ordering him not to interfere with the probe.
His family read political malice in the arrest, faulting EACC for drifting from investigating alleged fraud into investigating firearms.
"Why did an EACC raid meant to gather documents crucial to their corruption case, turn into an illegal firearms case? Does the registration of firearms fall under the jurisdiction of EACC?" the family spokesperson, Samuel Odhiambo, queried in a statement.
Mr Odhiambo stated that the family suspects EACC failed to get any evidence in probing corruption and was "now desperately trying to nail the governor on trumped-up charges."
"It is a poorly orchestrated scheme to politically persecute the governor and the people of Migori for reasons best known to the perpetrators. Fortunately, the people can see through it," maintained Odhiambo.
