Video of Pupils Hanging Out of Speeding Bus Causes Alarm

A video of pupils hanging dangerously on a speeding school bus has caused alarm across social media.

The video, taken by a concerned motorist, shows the pupils riding on the bus belonging to Kiriath-Jiam School located in Nairobi's Utawala area.

The pupils are seen dangling dangerously outside the windows of the moving bus without a care as they shout and bang the body of the vehicle.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the pupils were celebrating the recently released KCPE exam results.

However, our efforts to reach the school for comment were futile as our calls went unanswered.

In January, CS Fred Matiang'i ordered the painting of all schools buses in a yellow colour code to make them conspicuous and increase the safety of the school transport system.

The major overhaul was aimed at making school buses safer for the millions of children who board them during their daily commute.

Under the Kenyan traffic rules, any person found riding with body part outside the vehicle is liable to an instant fine of Kshs 1,000.

The video surfaced at the time of a heightened multi-agency crackdown aimed at restoring sanity on the Kenyan roads.

Matiang'i warned that the operation will be "ruthless, painful and a sustained exercise" until sanity is restored on the roads.
