Government Slashes Police Allowance by Half

There is disquiet in the police service after the government slashed new house allowance by half.

The promised allowances were substantially reduced mostly affecting those in the lower cadres.

The officers, who have been living in government houses for free, were directed to vacate them by the end of this month or continue living there on rent.

Initially, police officers based in Nairobi who were scheduled to get Ksh 18,124.

Officers in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and Meru were supposed to get Ksh 13,124 while those based in the rest of the country were supposed to receive an allowance of Ksh 8,124.

However according to the Interior Ministry, the figures were reviewed by the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC), the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Treasury.

National Police Service (NPS) issued a notice on new house allowances plus an introduction of commuter allowance.

Following the review of house allowances, an officer of the rank of sergeant in Nairobi will earn Ksh 9,800 as house allowance and an additional Sh4,000 as commuter allowance.

Sergeants in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret, Kisii, Kitale, Kakamega and Malindi will receive a house allowance of Ksh 7,300.

According to Sunday Nation, officers in other regions saw their allowances slashed to Ksh 5,500.
