KNEC Portal: How to Register Candidates for KCPE and KCSE

With the world moving towards a paperless system, more institutions are embracing technology as a more effective way to improve service delivery. This includes government institutions like the Kenya National Examination Council.

This article includes clear guidelines on how to access services in the KNEC portal including registration for examinations and checking results.

How to Register for KCPE & KCSE

KNEC now requires that all candidates sitting for their KCPE and KCSE examinations to register their details in their official web portal.

To access this service, candidates are required to visit www.knec.ac.ke and click on the tab that reads Candidate Registration

To obtain a password to enable logging in to the site, send an SMS to T2262 with the format KCPE#centrecode for KCPE registration or KCSE#centrecode for KCSE registration. The center code is the number your school is registered under.

You will then receive an 8-digit number which you shall use as the password to log in. To log in, enter your user name and password. The username you should enter is your school code then click log in.

You will be prompted to change your password as a security measure ensuring that only authorised persons can access your registration details. A form will then appear allowing you to change your password.

Registration is mostly done by school heads, except for some cases that may involve informal candidates.

Registration Procedure

  • First, download the application form.

  • Create a registration file by filling the details of the candidates.

  • Log in to the official KNEC website and upload the registration file.

  • Go to the ‘Enter new candidate’ option and edit it.

  • Go to the Edit existing candidates’ option and fill in the school details

  • Generate the nominal roll and school invoice and print them out.

Guidelines for Taking Photos for KCSE/KCPE Registration

There are several guidelines that should be considered while uploading photographs for KCPE and KCSE registration. They include;

  • It must be a coloured passport photograph taken using a digital camera.

  • The photo’s background should be cream or light grey (plain not flowered)

  • Photo size should be 45mm high x 35mm wide

  • No shadows.

  • The photo should be taken with eyes open and clearly visible (no sunglasses or spectacles)

  • The candidate should be facing forward, looking straight at the camera.

  • The Candidate should be having a neutral expression with the mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows)

  • Each candidate should be on his/her own, no group photos or objects like dummies or toys or even other people being visible on the photos.

  • The photo should be in sharp focus and clear with a strong definition between the face and background.

  • The photo must be in the frontal view containing the full face, neck, and shoulders of the candidate.

  • The photo should be recent (not more than six months old).

  • The photos MUST be saved with the full index of the candidate and in JPG format

  • All photos should be taken in school uniform

  • In addition to uploading the photos, all schools should submit the saved photographs to KNEC offices through their District Education Officers in Compact Discs (each photo should be matched with the index numbers, not names, in JPG format).



How to upload photos for KCPE or KCSE Registration in the KNEC portal

  • Transfer the photo of the candidate onto a working computer.

  • Save/rename the photos with the index number provided.

  • Create a folder named after your centre code.

  • Copy all the photos right into the folder.

  • Compress/zip the folder: Right-click the folder along with the photos.

  • Now select the ‘send to’ option. Click on the zipped folder. Login to the KNEC portal again and click the upload button.

  • Enter the username along with the password. Among the Tasks drop-down, select the ‘Upload candidate’s photos’ and click on ‘continue’.

  • Browse to the photos folder that is compressed and then click on upload. If the upload has been successful, you will see a message on the application.

How to Confirm a Candidate's Registration Details

To confirm the registration, go to the webpage http://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/confirmation.

The link will provide your registration details that will include your registration number and the centre you are to sit your examinations at.

It is important to note that the KCSE and KCPE examination registration should be done within the stipulated timeline to ensure that you are not locked out of the national examinations.
