The office of the DPP at the Makadara Law Court has rejected charges pressed against a woman who was arrested after filming police officers.
She appeared before court on Friday on charges of obstruction of justice. However, the prosecution stated that Sophia Njeri did not commit any crime.
“We cannot charge anyone just because the police arrested her filming them, we rejected the file since it is not a crime to take a film in public,” a prosecutor stated.
According to The Star, the prosecutor stated the court needed to have enough evidence to warrant the prosecution of the accused.
In a viral video doing rounds on social media, Njeri was filming five police officers dragging a lady from the front seat of a bus on Tuesday.
The police officers, who are said to operate along the Kasarani-Nairobi CBD route, arrested Njeri who was later released on a cash bail of Ksh10,000.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) condemned the arrest and raised the matter with Kasarani police station.
Njeri had posted the one minute video explaining that it had led to her arrest and that she had been taken to the station.
Kenyans on social media started a hashtag #ReleaseNjeri, urging the National Police Service to intervene and secure her release.
