Gilani Supermarket Closed Over Safety Issues in Nakuru

Gilani’s Supermarket was shut down on Thursday by the Nakuru County Government stating the building which houses the establishment, is unsafe for habitation.

The County Executive Committee (CEC) for Lands, Physical Planning and Housing, Francis Mwangi, made the announcement after he toured the building situated in Nakuru town.

According to Mwangi, the building is the oldest in Nakuru County. He added the structure was worn-out and unfit to pose as a business establishment.

“We have concern for the members of the public, and for us to be sure the public is safe, we issued a closure notice,” Mwangi stated.

The CEC was accompanied by Gilani’s Director, Shamsher Gilani, as well as the National Construction Authority during the inspection.

He added they would consider reopening the building when reports from relevant authorities confirm the building is safe for occupation.

In November 2018, city hall demolished a six-storey building in Kayole area of Nakuru after it was declared unsafe.

Kenyans had raised concern on social media over the safety of the establishment.

The owner of the building, Caroline Wanjiru, was arrested for constructing the house without approval. Later, the National Youth Service bulldozer descended on the building under tight security.
