NTSA Stops Car Number Plates Registration

Vehicle registration was halted about two weeks ago in an ongoing audit by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) system.

The audit is aimed at eradicating fake number plates, an issue, members of the public have complained about for some time.

According to Business Daily, several government agencies are involved in the clean up that comes following January’s terrorist attack in DusitD2 hotel complex.

The vehicle used by the terrorists during the attack had the same car number plates (KCN 340E) as another one found along Balozi road, Kitengela town.

The mission by NTSA has affected all players in the motor vehicle business including customers, dealers and banks.

Other services affected include issuance of driving licenses and renewal of road service licenses.

Early February, seven NTSA officials were arrested following accusations of aiding terrorists with fake motor vehicle number plates.

The suspects, Charles Wangocho, Stephen Kariuki, Nderitu Irving, Cosmas Ngeso, Jacqueline Githinji, Anthony Mjaka and Augustine Musembi were arrested following the discovery of a vehicle at Kitengela.

However, the officials were released after state counsel Duncan Ondimu said no evidence linking them to the attack was found.

He added the police were no longer interested in detaining them.
