Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Tuesday responded to claims that he stole Ksh2 million from a trader, Stephen Vicker Mangira, at gunpoint.
In a phone call to Kenyans.co.ke, the DPP dismissed the allegations explaining that he, together with other officers, had recovered more than Ksh18.5 million drug money from Mangira, in cash, during a raid at Reef Hotel which occurred two years ago.
"That is a lie...he should be asked what he was doing with Ksh18.5 million, we recovered (it) from him in cash.
"He is saying that people stole Ksh2 million from him including me, what was recovered was Ksh18.5 million and it is there," explained the DPP.
"The role I played (on the day of the raid), I was in charge of organised crime, we shared intelligence with the police and that's how the police managed to recover (the money).
"I'm intelligence, I don't hold guns around, that's why the police were there. So if it was anyone to use the gun it was not me," he clarified.
He further noted that they nabbed a number of drug traders who were in business with Mangira and were deported to Tanzania where they were later charged.
The businessman, on Tuesday, accused DPP Haji of threatening him with a gun and stealing Ksh2 million from him.
The trader, while testifying in a Mombasa Court, claimed that the DPP purported to arrest and charge him before robbing the money.
He further alleged that, at the time, Haji, who was an intelligence officer, was in the company of various other police officers during the raid that took place just months before he became the DPP.
"I accuse Mr Noordin Haji and Hamisi Salim Masha of jointly stealing Ksh2 million (and he) pointed a gun at my head and conducted a search on my person,” stated Mangira.
The trader further filed a suit against the DPP (and other officers) demanding that he (Haji) be barred from prosecuting his case because he had already been involved in it.
