Sports PS Speaks on Government Revoking 5 Stadia Project

Sports PS Kaberia on Thursday dismissed a statement that the government had revoked its five stadia project and chosen to focus on one, noting that the project is still on.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kaberia insisted that the government was focussed on this agenda and clarified that though there were delays, the project would still be seen through.

"The project is still very much on, its just that there are the normal delays but it is up and running," noted Kaberia.

He stated that some stadia were undergoing rehabilitation and that a press conference would be held to clear out any questions that people have regarding the matter.

"Nyayo and Kipchoge Keino stadiums are undergoing rehabilitation and will be ready by the end of this year (2019). We will have a press conference to address this issue and answer all questions regarding the issue,” he added.

DP Ruto advised that Kenya will have the five stadia in months time and stressed the importance of having them up.

“As we talk today, I know many people are saying we made pre-election promises in 2013 that we have not actualized them. But in six months’ time, the stadium in Wote will be complete, in three month’s time the stadium in Chuka will be complete, in three month’s time the stadium in Moyale will be complete, in six month’s time the stadium in Kamarini-West Pokot will be complete, in a couple of months the stadium in Eldoret will be complete,” vowed Deputy President Ruto.

Ruto noted that the government had faced a myriad of challenges while trying to ensure that the stadia promise becomes a reality, citing Nyeri, Mombasa and Kisumu counties as examples which have faced title deeds or environmental setbacks.

Kenya lost its chance of hosting the CHAN Africa Nations Championships after it was ruled out based on the poor state of stadia in the country.

"Unfortunately, lack of up-to-standard infrastructure to host the competition and the need to improve the existing ones, meant that Kenya would inevitably play second fiddle to better-placed countries that have invested heavily on infrastructure development over the years," observed El Amrani, Confederation of African Footbal (CAF) official.
