Sonko Refuses to Spend Ksh96 Million Allocated to His Office

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, on Tuesday, affirmed that he would not utilize the Ksh96 million "confidential budget" allocated to his office.

Speaking at City Hall during the electronic disbursement of Ksh400 million bursary fund for needy students in Nairobi County schools, Sonko stated that although the money had been allocated for operational expenses, he would not spend it.

He noted that he would only utilize funds in Nairobi City County budget if he was able to account for each and every coin to Nairobians.

“I will not use even a penny of the confidential budget, because I only want to spend what can be accounted for. Those spreading rumors to blackmail me should get their facts right,” he stated.

He further revealed that he never used the Ksh50 million that was allocated to his office as "confidential budget" in the last financial year.

“The Nairobi City County Assembly allocated me Ksh50 million as confidential budget in last financial year, but in my own wisdom, I never touched that money because I only use funds that I will be able to account for," Sonko stated.

Sonko said the Ksh400 Million 2019 bursary fund will be sent straight to the bank accounts of the schools of the beneficiaries.

"This this will automatically reduce cases of corruption that we witnessed before. We want our children to get a quality education," he added.

The Governor urged the County Assembly to act with speed and finalize its probe on the corruption cases witnessed in the last disbursement of the bursary fund.
