A by-election in Ugenya Constituency, Siaya County kicked off with reports of violence at one of the polling stations.
Area police boss Willy Simba confirmed that 3 suspects were arrested in connection to the incident.
He told Capital that the accused persons were caught “with deadly weapons and are chief suspects in an incident where a voter was severely slashed almost to death around Udira Kamrembo polling station.”
The ODM candidate in the by-election, Chris Karan, pointed fingers at his opponents and accused them of intimidation.
“We had an incident where a person was hurt and fortunately enough, we were able to catch up with the vehicle which was carrying the thugs. He was arrested and was taken to the police station. As I am speaking [sic], the suspect is at the Ukwala Police Station,” he stated.
Karan also expressed confidence that he would trample his opponent David Ochieng' who is vying on a Movement for Development and Growth.
The mini poll had started showing signs of violence when angry youth stoned Senator James Orengo's convoy when he toured the region to campaign for the ODM candidate.
Some of the vehicles extensively damaged belonged to Alego-Usonga MP Samwel Atandi and Siaya County Education Executive Mary Olute.
The heated battle for the Ugenya Constituency seat made IEBC officials summon all contending candidates on Monday for an emergency security meeting concerning the Sunday incident.
Ochieng arrived two hours late, arguing that he had to be assured of his security first.
