Do Not Expect Long Rains in 2019 - Meteorological Department

The Meteorological Department has come out to warn that the eagerly awaited long rains may not come after all.

The Acting Deputy Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department Bernard Chanzu revealed that Kenyans should not expect the March-April –May long rains.

Chanzu went on to ask Kenyans to brace themselves for tougher times ahead in terms of scarcity of water resources for drinking, sanitation and other industrial uses including the production of electricity.

The bigger picture about prolonged dry spell which means a drought foreseeable is growing increasingly clear,” he reported on Tuesday

He also noted that their data showed that the month of May might come and go without any rains.

The Meteorological Department claimed that Cyclone Idai that ripped through Mozambique last month played a major role in delaying of the long rains.

Earlier this year, it had been warned that the rains would be delayed and depressed stating in April rather than the normal March.

However, on Tuesday, the department explained that there would be patched rainfall with the biggest concern being that there might be no rains at all.

It is something that is happening throughout the world and which is associated with the global atmosphere where precipitation patterns are being moved in new directions by climatic changes,” Chanzu added.

Generally, the sunny and dry conditions are expected to prevail in most parts of the country with some areas having day and night temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius.
