Kenyan Family Wins Ksh5 Million on The Ellen Show

A Kenyan family has won over Ksh5 million on an American TV show.

When Achieng Agutu took to the floor to show her dance moves on The Ellen Show, she never anticipated how great things would unfold for her.

The host had planned to surprise her by inviting her family and fly in her parents from Kisumu and her brother all the way from South Africa.

Achieng hadn't seen her family in more than two years.

I moved here (to the U.S) about five years ago for higher education and it’s been amazing but it’s also been really hard for my family back in Kenya because they’ve honestly done every single thing from selling land to taking loans to be able to pay my school fees and make sure that I’m comfortable,” narrated Achieng.

She went on to explain several jobs that help her stay afloat.

I work one full-time job, I’m an admissions counselor at Holy Cross College, but then I babysit for two families; I wash people’s cars and clean their houses; I’m an Uber driver; I also teach English to international students,” she revealed.

Ellen Degeneres, who is the show host, pretends to have her family reconnect with Achieng on a video call but when it seems the signal has some issues, she leaves the set to go check only for Achieng’s family to emerge from behind the doors.

The family is then ushered to a segment of the show referred to as the ‘Million Dollar May’ where they were given a chance to win some money.

On the screen appeared three cards, one with 10,000 dollars, the second with 25,000 dollars and the last one with 50,000 dollars for them to pick one after a shuffle.

The family was lucky to pick the 50,000 dollar card after a unanimous decision, an approximate of Ksh5 million.
