Hefty Salaries Cabinet Secretaries & Governors Take Home

As the debate on the new housing allowances that MPs have awarded themselves continues to rock conversations, it is also important to highlight what other state officers take home.

In a 2017 Kenya Gazette Notice, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) listed the amount various public servants ought to earn.

According to the notice, Cabinet Secretaries and Governors are some of the highly paid servants and are entitled to a monthly gross pay of Ksh 924,000.

Benefits that accompany CSs include an inpatient cover of Ksh10 million, an outpatient cover of Ksh 300,000, Ksh 150,000 for maternity and Ksh 75,000 for dental and optical insurance.

Taxpayers also chip in Ksh 200,000 house allowance and Ksh 20,000 per month for a CS to splash on airtime.

Transport is fully catered for by the National Government and security is provided with advice from the Inspector General of Police.

When it comes to transport and health allowances, governors enjoy the same perks as CSs.

Both governors and CSs have Life and Personal Accident insurance covers for a value equivalent to three times their annual salaries

Upon retirement, county bosses are entitled to 31 per cent of the basic pay for the term in office.

Unlike CSs, governors are housed by the government and also benefit from a mortgage of up to Ksh40 million which must be fully paid by the end of the governor's term.

The county heads are also at liberty to take car loans of up to Ksh10 million.

Like CSs, governors also get to splash Ksh 20,000 on airtime.
