Police Officers Throw Tear Gas at Revellers, Leaving 4 Unconscious

Police in South Imenti, Meru County, are on the spot after throwing tear gas canisters at revelers, leaving four people unconscious and others injured.

The 10 pm Saturday night incident forced some of the victims to escape from the locked bar through the roof which led to injuries, Daily Nation reports.

It is alleged that the police officers knocked on the door and when the occupants refused to open it, they threw tear gas canisters inside the room.

“We were enjoying our drink at around 10.20pm while the doors were closed. Suddenly, tear gas canisters were thrown inside leaving many gasping for breath," John Mwendwa, a reveler stated.

One of the witnesses indicated that after the officers realised the damage they had caused, they got into the bar and started helping those that had fainted as they took some to hospital.

“After taking them to hospital, the police officers confiscated the treatment records and gave one of the men Ksh 1,500. They asked him not to utter a word about the incident,” a witness, Maryanne Nkirote stated.

The officers and South Imenti Police Commander, William Maronga, however, denied these claims citing that they used tear gas after some youth pelted stones at them.

“The police officers were on routine patrol when they met youths who started throwing stones. The officers lobbed tear gas to disperse the rowdy," Maronga noted.

He further warned the public against attacking police officers.
