The Nairobi diocese head of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Rt Rev Bishop Joel Waweru, on Sunday, at the St Martins Church Kahawa Wendani, warned politicians against dishonouring the pulpit.
The bishop was addressing politicians including Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, who were attending the church service in Kiambu County.
In his sermon, the bishop warned the leaders of blasphemy, telling Ms Jumwa that it was wrong of her to change the lyrics of a worship song to glorify Deputy President William Ruto.
He stated that the church would find it hard to allow politicians make unwarranted speeches on the pulpit.
On May 19, a video went viral on social media platforms whereby Ms Jumwa was belting out a corrupted version of the popular Christian song hakuna wa kufanana na wewe in praise of the deputy president.
Her corrupted song did not go down well with netizens, especially the Christian faithful, who stated that her actions were nothing short of blasphemy.
Responding to the bishop, Ms Jumwa assured him that she would obey his directive.
"Bishop Waweru nimetii (I obey)," she addressed the bishop.
"Kutii ni bora kuliko thabihu, mimi nataka kukuambia bishop mimi ningetaka kukua mtu wa kwanza kutakia mema naibu wa rais na singetaka kuwa wa kwanza kumharibia naibu wa rais.
(Obedience is better than sacrifice. Bishop, I'd like to tell you that I would be the first person to wish the deputy president well and I'd not want to be the one to spoil things for him)," she stated.
