The Government, through the National Treasury, has slashed Ksh 4.2 billion from the budget allocation of Members of Parliament (MPs).
In turn, the Budget and Appropriations committee has hence had to reduce part of the budget to fit the cost.
The Public Service Commission had allocated Ksh 2.8 billion for buying vehicles for members representing constituencies within the Nairobi Metropolitan area.
Makali Mulu, a member of the committee, stated that a proposal to buy vehicles for MPs representing the Nairobi Metropolitan was rejected due to budgetary allocations.
“We concluded that the vehicles were not a necessity especially with the Treasury facing huge funds deficit,” the Kitui Central MP stated.
He added that the committee decided to cut on areas that were not essential such as foreign travel.
In its report, the Budget and Appropriations Committee explained that the slashing of budgets was aimed at addressing the unemployment crisis among the youth.
The Ministry of Interior has also suffered a blow after its budget was reduced by Ksh1.5 billion that was intended for the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) and the National Secure Communication and Surveillance System.
