Police Nab 83 People During Bhang Smoking Competition

Police in Murang’a have arrested over 83 people who had gathered to participate in a bhang smoking competition.

Muranga South Police Commander John Ondit revealed that the suspects were nabbed at a hotel in Kenol town within Murang’a County.

A hotel branded La Zeros was closed down as police launched investigations into the said party.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in a court in Kigumo on Monday to answer to charges.

Police also seized 146 rolls of bhang that they suspected were supposed to be used in the competition.

The party was dubbed ‘Rasta Man Prayer Party’ and no entrance fee was charged, instead interested parties were supposed to bring rolls of bhang.

Kenyans took to social media to try and understand how the suspects, being such a huge number, organised the event with so much secrecy that police officers only knew about it on the material day.

These arrests come at a time when the debate is raging across the whole country on whether bhang should be legalised or not.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i had come out to categorically announce that the government would not consider legalising marijuana.

The CS also revealed that he had received a letter from an American-based pharmaceutical company requesting a license to cultivate bhang in Kenya for medical purposes.
