Recent revelations by Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko exposed several conmen who had for a long time duped Kenyans in his name.
Reports by The Star brought to light such a case involving a woman only identified as Jane.
The Kangemi resident claimed to have come across a facebook page belonging to 'Governor Sonko' that was offering free motorbikes as gifts.
The post, however, requested a fee of Ksh 2,000 for purposes of processing documents for the said bike.
The lady who was well versed with the governor's philanthropic nature saw the opportunity as a chance to uplift her family's living standard as well as earn extra income from the potential asset.
The mother of four who had no idea that the account was fake grabbed the opportunity and sent the money.
“I have nothing in life and but have children who depend on me. I thought I should try my luck and see if things would change,” she narrated amid tears.
The man later asked to be friends instead of processing the bike but despite the warning signs, the unsuspecting Jane kept her hopes high patiently waiting for the motorbike.
Things took an unexpected turn when the man promised to come to Kenya and marry her and aid her in actualizing a life-changing business idea.
The love-struck Jane was also swayed by the romantic conversations that enticed her into sending him nude photos of herself.
However, whenever she asked for the motorbike, the man threatened to post her nudes on social media. Her attention to seek financial help when she was overwhelmed by hospital bills were also met by further threats.
Jane's case is currently under investigation by Kabete police who are working round the clock to bring the conman to book.
Jane's misfortunes came to a halt when she saw another Facebook post by Sonko warning against swindlers impersonating him, and also claiming to be in a position to help them get jobs within the county.
The governor denounced a fraudulent Google Play App that was being used to dupe Kenyans, by impersonating him.
He posted photos showing the app named Mike Sonko Rescue Loans - Official and categorically denied any links to the account.
"Any member of the public who has fallen prey to such fraudsters should report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission ()EACC or the County Government for action," he emphasised.
