Govt Ordered to Pay Ksh222M to 1982 Coup Soldiers

The government has been ordered to compensate 33 ex-KDF officers a total of Ksh222 million for unfair dismissal and inhumane treatment they received after the 1982 coup attempt.

Senate's National Security Defence and Foreign Relations committee on Wednesday further stated that the government should stop the unfair treatment over the compensation.

The decision was arrived at after the soldiers petitioned the Senate when the government continued to ignore court orders.

Senate revealed that the soldiers had won a 30-year court battle against the government.

In their petition, the former military men opened up about how they were arrested, tortured, detained and imprisoned for six months to several years without compensation.

Daily Nation reported, that the soldiers had filed several petitions at the High Court and were awarded compensation by different judges on diverse dates.

In a meeting with Defence Cabinet Secretary Rachael Omamo, the senators informed her that the government had no option but to source for funds and pay the soldiers.

The ministry should do everything possible to pay these people. We cannot allow it to punish these people further,” affirmed committee chairman Yusuf Haji.

The senators held CS Omamo and the ministry responsible for endlessly frustrating the soldiers yet they dedicated their time to serving the country.

It would be an injustice to delay this payment further,” noted nominated senator Judith Pareno.

Kisumu Senator Fred Outa accused the CS of ignoring the court, thereby infringing upon the rights of the petitioners.
