Sonko Helps Widow Keep Multi-Billion Property

Judith Wanjiru Njenga, a widow who has been battling to win back her Upper Hill land in Nairobi, believed to be worth Ksh1.5 billion, has gotten relief after the Environment and Land Court ruled that the property belongs to her.

Attempts to evict the widow were thwarted by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, in 2015, when he was a senator.

Sonko intervened after goons invaded the property, then started destroying and stealing Wanjiru’s possessions.

The Nairobi governor recently revealed that for the last three years Mrs Njenga was in court, he was personally paying for the legal fees.

“The court finds that the plaintiff [Masto Holding Limited] has failed to prove its claim on a balance of probabilities and it is hereby dismissed,” the judge ruled.

The property, reference number 209/522/2 (LR Number 3255/1), was initially registered in the name of Andrew Njenga, Wanjiru’s deceased husband.

Wanjiru revealed to the court that she bought the land with her husband in 1974, built their matrimonial home on it and have been in possession of it to date.

She denied that an auction of the property took place, noting that her late husband never took a loan of Ksh10 million, as alleged by Masto Holding.

She maintained that no documentary evidence of the loan and its subsequent default by her late husband was ever provided.

Njenga died on July 7, 2010, and she applied for a letter of administration for the estate, which was confirmed and issued on November 22, 2010.
