How Governor Recovered Ksh200M From Rogue Debtors

Kisumu Governor, Anyang' Nyong'o's administration has received ksh200 million in the last three months after hiring debt collectors in the county.

It is reported that the county sought services of a debt collection firm to help it recover the debt that had accrued since 2008.

"We have recovered Ksh200 million. The initiative is bearing fruit and we look forward to improving our revenue proceeds," County Chief  Finance Officer Eric Angwenyi stated.

In a report by the Auditor General's office, property owners are said to have been defaulting on land rates and house rates, which led to the county issuing 300 demand letters to rate defaulters.

"After we released the demand letters, our clients have begun to offset the debt. Some have also come to us pleading for a repayment schedule negotiation.

"Others are asking for a waiver especially on debts that date back 11 years ago," Ms Angwenyi told the Standard.

He added that the defaulters needed to pay debts so that the county would be able to implement the development agenda.

The county aims to recover Ksh20 billion, which is owed by several commercial enterprises.

The county's budget is Ksh9.2 billion after it was cut down from Ksh9.6 million due to shortcomings in revenue targets.
