Likoni Tragedy: Post Mortem Results Released

The post-mortem results of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, who drowned at the Indian ocean on September 29, have been released.

After performing the procedure, Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor on Wednesday, October 16, stated that the autopsy revealed the two died of suffocation.

The autopsy, which took one and a half hours, took place at the Jocham Hospital mortuary in Mombasa.

Luka Mbati, the family spokesman, stated that the burial arrangements would commence immediately.

The bodies of the 35-year-old woman and her nine-year-old daughter were retrieved from the ocean 13 days after their vehicle slid from the ferry.

CCTV footage showed how the car slid from the prow of MV Harambee into the ocean at 6:13 p.m on September 29.

The footage showed the hind lights of the vehicle flickering as young Amanda played on her mother's lap on the driver's seat.

The driver's window and the back passenger windows were cracked open, while the rest were tightly shut. The wipers were found on.

As soon as the car was retrieved, John Wambua, the widower,  rushed to confirm if his wife's and daughter's bodies were in the car.

"I'm still struggling to accept all this, but I am happy to see the bodies out," Wambua had told detectives.
