Raila's Joke in Kibra Campaigns Backfires on Him

ODM leader Raila Odinga on Saturday, November 2, sought the support of the Kamba community in the Kibra by-election by meeting with leaders led by governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni).

During the meeting, Raila stated that he was assured of the community's support in the Kibra election in the area perceived to be the opposition's party stronghold.

"Wakamba ni waaminifu kama akina mama. Wakisema wanakupatia wanakupatia (the Kambas are loyal and are like women when they say they will support you, they will keep their word)" he stated amidst laughs from the crowd.

His comments appear to have rubbed a section of Kenyans the wrong way with many faulting his choice of words in his remarks.

Mavoko MP Patrick Makau expressing his disappointment with the comments.

"I’m shocked by Raila’s insult to the Akamba community and all women. The fact that Kalonzo has agreed to deputize you twice, losing does not qualify you to imagine us as weak.

"We only wanted to win and bring change to this Nation. Now I believe you do not respect the Kamba nation," he stated.

A section of Kenyans also took offence with the comments with one user stating, "This is horrible. It is getting ugly."

Another netizen noted, "These are insults to Kamba women, and hate speech as well."

Others were of the opinion that there was nothing wrong with his comments.

"But depending from which angle you are seeing and listening to this from, different people are getting different meanings to this," another stated.

"I dont see anything wrong with the comment actualy according to he meant kambas cant betray you when they say they will vote for you it's just figurative language," one Kenyan noted.
