Sonko's Body Guards Rearrested

Four of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's bodyguards who reportedly caused chaos outside the Integrity Centre on Tuesday were on Wednesday, November 6 rearrested.

According to a report by the Daily Nation, the bodyguards were arrested even after Sonko had paid a cash bail for their release from custody on charges of resisting arrest and causing chaos.

Additional reports by the publication also confirmed that the four had spent Tuesday night in custody following a fracas outside the EACC headquarters where Sonko had gone for questioning.

On Wednesday, November 6, the four, Richard Bosire, John Abok, Joseph Mwangi, Kennedy Odhiambo appeared before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, where they denied the charges and were released on a cash bail of KSh 100, 000 each.

They were however rearrested on Wednesday afternoon on new charges of allegedly assaulting police officers.

This came after Sonko was caught on camera apparently slapping a Standard Media Group journalist Collins Kweyu, a photographer while arriving at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, November 5.

This had elicited a swift reaction from the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) which demanded an investigation into the matter.

The council, in a statement posted on Twitter, was outraged by the fact that the police did not take any measures to protect the journalist at the scene, instead, MCK stated that they deliberately hauled teargas canisters at the reporters to prevent them from recording the happenings.

Earlier in the day, the governor's supporters stormed EACC headquarters to protest against the agency after it summoned the Nairobi county boss.

The protestors comprising mostly bodaboda riders were met with the full wrath of police officers who repelled them.

On Monday, November 4, Sonko had claimed that an EACC official was out to frustrate him due to his sustained fight against land grabbing in Nairobi.

The governor further bought full-page ad space on The Standard to detail how EACC's Director of Investigations, Abdi Mohamud had allegedly misused his office to cover-up crimes.
