Autopsy results of the late Court of Appeal Judge Prof Otieno Odek were released on Tuesday, December 24, 2019.
Odek, who died inside his house in Kisumu on Monday, December 16, had a blood clot in his right leg which caused a blockage in one of his arteries which lead to a subsequent clot in the lungs.
The findings were made after a three-hour session at the Aga Khan Hospital mortuary by Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
“The clot chocked the heart. The cause of death is pulmonary thromboembolism,” Oduor stated.
“But for Justice Odek, I think blood became static because of prolonged sitting. Being a judge, his work involves a lot of sitting. It is a risk factor,” he added.
Earlier, questions were raised after various publications reported that three sex-enhancing tablets were found beside the judge's bed.
The government pathologist on Tuesday clarified that the deceased's death had nothing to do with the sex pills.
Odek was sworn in as a Court of Appeal judge in 2012. He had applied to be a Supreme Court justice in 2011 but did not sail through.
Justice Odek made headlines in December 2018 when Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji disclosed that he was lined up to testify against lawyer Tom Ojienda in a case involving former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
Ojienda was under investigation in connection with a case concerning Mumias Sugar Company.
Haji, in the statement, noted that Prof Odek had offered a statement to the investigators on his own volition.
